Saosin

Saosin adalah grup musik rock asal Newport Beach, California, Amerika Serikat. Band ini dibentuk pada tahun 2003 dan merekam EPpertama mereka, Translating the Name, pada tahun yang sama bersama vokalis pertama mereka Anthony Green. Green meninggalkan Saosin mengikuti keputusan band yang ingin menandatangani kontrak dengan major label, Capitol Records. Vokalis Cove Reber kemudian segera menggantikan posisinya sebelum mereka memulai proses rekaman album perdana mereka Saosin. Album studio kedua mereka, In Search of Solid Ground, dirilis pada September 2009 melalui Virgin dan tiga lagu diantaranya merupakan lagu The Grey EP yang direkam ulang. Saosin berpisah jalan dengan Cove Reber pada 21 Juli 2010 dan saat ini hanya terdiri atas gitarist Beau Burchell dan Justin Shekoski, bassist Chris Sorenson, dan drummer Alex Rodriguez.

Asal mula nama

Anthony Green, vokalis pertama band ini, pada awalnya mengusulkan "Saosin" sebagai nama band. Kata "Saosin" diadaptasi dari bahasa Cina (小心 xiao xin) yang berarti "peringatan" ("caution"). Kata tersebut berasal dari pribahasa Cina pada abad 15 tentang seorang ayah yang memperingatkan anak lelakinya yang menikah karena uang dan tidak terikat secara emosional kepada istrinya, karena beranggapan mereka dapat meninggal sewaktu-waktu. Green menjelaskan bahwa maksud dibalik hal itu adalah sebagai referensi fakta bahwa tidak ada yang abadi.^[6] Sementara interpretasi personal Green terhadap kata 小心 tidak terlalu jelas, kata 小心 xiao xin sendiri secara umum digunakan di China untuk mengekspresikan peringatan.

Green sendiri pernah menulis lagu berjudul "Saosin" untuk album I Remember When This All Meant Something karya band SMA-nya, Audience of One.^[7][8]

[sunting]Formasi dan Translating the Name (2003–2004)

Formasi awal Saosin, terdiri dari Beau Burchell, Justin Shekoski, Zach Kennedy dan mantan vokalis Anthony Green, dibentuk pada musim anas 2003.^[9] Pada 17 Juni, mereka merilisEP pertama mereka Translating the Name.^[10] EP tersebut segera menuai sukses dan menjadi sangat populer di situs musik dan forum online.

Saosin pertama kali menjadi populer lewat promosi melalui Internet. Mereka menjadi dikenal atas gaya musikal mereka yang berbeda, lama sebelum album studio pertama mereka dirilis, dan dipopulerkan melalui situs jejaring sosial dan situs musik seperti MySpace. EP pertama mereka terjua sekitar 62.000 copy.^[11]

Drummer sementara Pat McGrath dan bassist Zach Kennedy meninggalkan band sangat awal dalam perjalanan karir Saosin. Pada Februari 2004, vokalis Anthony Green meninggalkan Saosin dan kemudian membentuk Circa Survive. Green menyatakan dia mengalami depresi serta rindu terhadap rumah dan keluarganya.^[15] Terlebih lagi, Green juga kecewa dengan arah yang akan diambil band dan tidak menyukai bahwa dia tidak diikutsertakan dalam proses penulisan lagu.^[15] Saosin menyelesaikan obligasi Warped Tour mereka dengan bantuan Philip Sneed dari Story of the Year. Sebuah audisi umum tingkat nasional kemudian diadakan untuk mencari vokalis baru.

Setelah proses audisi dan beberapa demo vokal, Cove Reber yang saat itu berusia 19 tahun, yang sebelumnya merupakan vokalis band lokal Mormon in the Middle dan Stamp Out Detroit, diumumkan sebagai vokalis permanen bagi Saosin. Reber mengirimkan kaset demonya dimana dia menyanyikan "Mookie's Last Christmas" dalam versi akustik. Beredar spekulasi bahwa dalam demo tersebut juga terdapat beberapa lagu dari Translating the Name. Ketika Beau Burchell pertama kali mendengarkan demo tersebut, dia mengira Anthony Green sedang berusaha mengakali mereka, atas gaya vokal Reber sangat mirip dengan Green pada saat demo itu direkam.

Dalam sebuah wawancara dengan PlayPro.com, Reber menyatakan, “everyone I’ve played with wants to make music their lives… Saosin is a band on a completely different level. All these dudes are freaks about music.”^[16] Masuknya Reber sebagai vokalis baru sangatlah sulit diterima karena Green yang lebih berpengalaman adalah pusat dari Saosin di mata para penggemar mereka. Banyak penggemar menganggap masa-masa bersama Green sangatlah berbeda dengan Saosin sekarang ini. Terdapat beberapa fans nyata dari kedua era (era Green & era Reber) memperdebatkan tentang siapa yang lebih baik.

Saosin kemudian tampil dalam tour Taste of Chaos musim dingin berikutnya. Saosin juga menandatangani kontrak dengan Capitol Records pada bulan Maret dan melakukan tour keliling Amerika Serikat dalam Warped Tour untuk kedua kalinya. Musim panas berikutnya, mereka merilis Saosin EP. Pada awalnya mereka ingin merilis sebagai demo gratis, namun pihak Capitol Records tidak mengizinkannya dan merilisnya sebagai EP. Album tersebut berisi beberapa lagu demo yang kemudian direkam ulang untuk album studio pertama mereka. Saosin terus melakukan tour sepanjang tahun 2005, dengan ditambah menjadi aksi pembuka bagi Avenged Sevenfold dan Coheed and Cambria.

Setelah beristirahat dari tour pada bulan Februari hingga Juni, Saosin merilis album studio pertama mereka, Saosin, pada 26 September 2006 melalui Capitol Records. Produser musik terkenal, Howard Benson disewa untuk bekerja pada album tersebut. Benson sendiri pernah bekerja bersama My Chemical Romance dan Blindside.

Selama sisa tahun 2006, Saosin melakukan tour internasional Taste of Chaos, memainkan penampilan pertama mereka di luar Amerika. Mereka juga melakukan tour di Amerika Serikat bersama Bleeding Through dan Senses Fail. Mereka terus melakukan tour pada tahun 2007, dimulai dengan tour bersama Senses Fail, Alexisonfire, The Sleeping, dan Drop Dead, Gorgeous. Saosin juga diundang oleh organisasi nirlabaInvisible Children untuk sebuah tour. Pada bulan Februari 2007 mereka bergabung lagi dengan tour Taste of Chaos. Antara bulan April dan Juni mereka melakukan tour keliling Eropa, Australia, Jepang, dan Indonesia.

Ketika Saosin kembali ke Amerika Serikat, mereka melanjutkan tour mereka bersama Poison the Well, The Receiving End of Sirens, Fioredan Flight 409. Pada akhir musim panas 2007, mereka ikut menjadi bagian dalam tour Projekt Revolution yang diadakan oleh Linkin Park.

Setelah itu mereka melakukan tour di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada bersama Alexisonfire, Envy on the Coast, Norma Jean dan The Dear And Departed. Sebuah konser Saosin direkam pada penampilan mereka tanggal 3 November 2007 di The Theater of Living Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rekaman konser tersebut kemudian dirilis menjadi album live berjudul Come Close.

Saosin kemudian tampil di Australia antara bulan Februari dan Maret, hingga kemudian mereka tampil di Singapura pada tanggal 7 Maret sebagai aksi pembuka bagi Incubus dalam Light Grenades Tour mereka. Dalam perjalanan pulang mereka mengunjungi Bali, Hawaii, dan Mexico. Setelah dua penampilan terakhir di California pada bulan April, mereka mengambi masa istirahat dari tour.

Saosin kembali dalam tour pada bulan Oktober 2008 bersama Underoath dan The Devil Wears Prada. Saosin juga merilis EP berjudul The Grey pada 14 Oktober 2008. Album mini berisi tiga lagu demo baru tersebut dijual selama tour dan di iTunes.^[17] Tujuan dari The Grey EP adalah untuk menunjukkan demo yang telah mereka rekam; tindakan yang sama denganSaosin EP yang berisi lagu demo dari album Saosin.

Pada awal 2009, mereka memulai proses rekaman bersama produser Butch Walker. Mereka juga bekerja sama dengan Hurley untuk menyiarkan proses rekaman secara live pada situs web Hurley.^[18] Saosin merilis album kedua mereka, In Search of Solid Ground, pada 9 September 2009 melalui Virgin Records. Tiga lagu Saosin yang tidak dirilis dibocorkan lewat internet melalui Hurley Live Recording Stream yang menyiarkan proses rekaman album In Search of Solid Ground. Para penggemar menamai ketiga lagu tersebut "The Norma Jean Song," "Back to Greatness" dan "Untitled".

Saosin kemudian mulai melakukan tour di seluruh Australia pada Juni 2010 mendukung tour Story Of The Year. Juga bersama mereka pada tour tersebut adalah blessthefall.^[19] Saosin kemudian menyatakan di Twitter bahwa mereka telah keluar dari Virgin records.^[5]

[sunting]Kepergian Cove Reber, rumor pengganti, dan album ketiga (2010-sekarang)

Pada 21 Juli 2010, gitaris Beau Burchell membuat pengumuman sebagai berikut: “Well, a few days ago, Alex, Justin, Chris and I got back into the studio for our first group writing/jam session. We have all been writing things on our own, but it was cool to get into a room and play with loud amps all together again. I am very excited about this record, for a few different reasons. After 5 years with Cove, we have decided to part ways. So it will be a new experience for us, not knowing what to expect in the vocal dept, who will replace him, or if we will even find a replacement this century.”^[20] Reber diminta untuk keluar dari band atas penurunan kemampuan vokal dan performa panggung. Berdasarkan keterangan Justin Shekoski, “We didn't feel he could represent the music that we have recorded well on stage.” Justin juga kemudian berkomentar tentang rumor yang beredar di YouTube yang mengatakan Cove dikeluarkan karena "tidak sama seperti anggota band yang lain". Justin berkomentar:

“We kicked cove out of the band because his stage performance and vocal performances were on a downward spiral. We didn’t feel he could represent the Music that we have recorded well on stage. We are not on a record label! Virgin (since that’s the label we were on) didnt have anything to do with the firing, they dropped us before it all went down. We didn’t kick him out because he has long hair or because he doesn’t look like us haha, I have long hair as well. And the part about cove being “clean”? This must be a joke. He was the only member of Saosin that smokes cigarettes religiously. If that’s not mind altering enough for you mormons, I have smoked the devils Lettace (weed) with him tons of times. Oh, Drinking with cove is also fun I must say. I hope none of you judge him for it because it’s his life. Free will. I’m saying this because everyone has their vises [sic] and coves not exempt from that list. Either way you can smoke as much as you want for all I care, just as long as your voice sounds great. The problem is that smoking for him is like me warming up for a show by hitting a brick wall with my bare hands. Listen, all I’m saying is that if you do actualy know cove or the situation, than either you are delusional or you are straight up lying to anyone dumb enough to go on YouTube and actually think you know what you are talking about. Just try to keep it real. Party on Garth, - Justin”^[21]

Cove kemudian menanggapi komentar terang-terangan Justin dengan menyatakan:

“In 2003, I fell in love with a band that not only changed the way that I viewed music, but also inspired me to pursue my dreams. In 2004, the members of that very band that I was madly in love with took a giant risk and gave me, the worlds biggest Saosin fan, a shot. I got to play and make music with my heroes. Even now, Justin, Alex, Beau and Chris are living legends in my mind. It’s not very often that you hear someone say that they had the amazing privilege of working with people they so highly admire and respect. But all bands have their problems and we were no exception. It all started with one comment directed towards me. That seemingly small comment completely drained every ounce of confidence I had worked so hard to build up. Not only did it completely catch me off guard, but not one of my heroes stood up for me, let alone acknowledged that the comment made was truly uncalled for. Thinking you’ve let your heroes down in even the smallest way really freaking sucks. I’m sorry if any of you feel ripped off from my live performances- I take that to heart because every night that I get up on stage, I’m doing it for you guys- for the fans who come to our shows and show us support. As far as smoking goes, it’s not something I intentionally hid but it’s definitely not a habit I wanted to broadcast or promote. Let me make this crystal clear, it’s not a cool thing to do. Anyone who says it is “cool” is flat out lying to you. We all have our demons and this is one I struggle with. For a while now, I had been feeling like it was only a matter of time until my end with Saosin was going to come. I’m just glad I got to sing, write, and record songs with my heroes. For those of you who feel like my role in Saosin was a dominant one, for better or for worse, it wasn’t; every decision we made, we made together. Whether you feel like my departure is positive or negative, I really do wish Justin, Beau, Chris and Alex the best of luck and I will always support them in all that they do. Now that that’s off my chest, life has been treating me awesome these days. The passion and love for music I felt I had lost is back, my confidence is growing daily, and I really can’t wait to show you all what I’ve been working on. Thank you all for giving me the wonderful opportunity to live out my dream over the last 6 years. It was one hell of a ride, but I truly believe that the best is yet to come.”^[22]

Cove Reber sekarang berencana membuka usaha studio rekaman di daerah Vista, California dengan rekan bisnisnya Joey Bradford. Pada tanggal 2 November, Saosin menyatakan di halaman Facebook mereka bahwa mereka telah menyelesaikan dua lagu baru yang disebut sebagai "Jud Jud Jud" dan "Roflcopters".^[23]
